Notes on Chen Mao Shuen Nocturne No.1

Chen Mao Shuen’s compositional works is arranged by odd numbers with Heptatonic scale, even numbers with chromatic scale.

Rhythmically, Chen favours in combining simple and compound rhythm through out his piano works.

This Nocturne is presented in ABA form. Harmonisation is based on the Yu key in A note from the heptatonic scale.

In A part, subject expresses in conversational manner. Continuing the original 2 motives along with imitative improvisational passage builds up till the climax and transitions with semitone scale which is generally used for decorative purpose, finally bridges with a question feel like motive into the B part.

In the B part, in a more calming setting, motives deliberates in conversation by actively using semitone scale and heptatonic scale, elaborating the atmosphere of section B. With confirmation through a repetitive Yu key in A note heptatonic scale passage brings us back to the A part.

As the A part returns, although similar elements and musical passages are most likely identical. The feel of it shall be expressed differently from the original A part as a realisation of a journey.

The choice is up to the performers to express actively or peacefully. The goal is that the feeling of the returned A part now is different from it was before.

At the end, the last 2 chords ends with a peaceful feel. I personally would relate this cadence in Plegal (IV-I in octatonic scale), back to the Tonic in octatonic scale, A note Yu key in Heptatonic scale.
